Mandii, I think teachers have to be exceptionally careful when they discipline a classroom nowadays. There are so many more rules and guidelines to follow within the school, plus parents do not take any form of discipline lightly. I think staying in for recess in an acceptable punishment, as well as not being able to work with friends during class activities. However, taking every positive part out of class will only make the students miserable and end up acting worse in the long run. I think screaming at students is wrong too. It is one thing to raise your voice and be stern, but yelling is taking it too far. And of course, teacher's should never put their hands on students or verbally abuse them with name calling or insulting them.
Mandii, I do agree with the comment above it. Teachers used to be able to whack kids and now they can barely even touch a student on the arm without being inappropriate. It is almost hard to discipline without crossing some sort of line.
Mandii, I also agree that disciplinary action in the classroom is a very fine line to walk on. I also think that what is allowable varies from school to school and the children in your classroom. I have heard of cases in certain special education schools that some disciplinary actions are allowed to be hands on depending on the situation. But even then you have to be careful of what classifies as "too much."
Samantha, I agree with you about how it is hard to discipline kids because most parents do not take it lightly. It is almost as if they feel like you are stepping on their feet and taking their job. When in reality, you are only helping. Of course taking every fun part out of the class is not the best way to go. But I do like your idea about taking away recess. It would be enough to get the point across but not too severe. Yelling and putting your hands on a kid is most definitely the wrong way to go in my opinion. I think a healthy medium would be to just to have a strict tone and to stick to what you say.
Michelle, You are correct; it is not like the old days when nuns would run around with rulers smacking kids. It almost seems as if there are too many rules and guidlines that it puts fear into teachers. So, teachers may back off and in return not teach as well or be less interactive.
Deana, Even though a school may accept the hands on approach for a specific situation, I would still try to stay away from that because like you said, there is still a thin line between right and wrong. I would only use the hands on approach if I or another student was in danger and it was absolutely necessary.
